Welcome to 10th Ivanhoe Scout Group
Welcome and thank you for your interest in enrolling your child in the world’s largest youth movement and especially for choosing our dynamic group, 10th Ivanhoe.
Your child will be joining as a Joey Scout (5*-8 years), a Cub Scout (8-11 years), a Scout (11-14 years), a Venturer Scout (14-18) or a Rover (18-26).
(* 5 year old Joeys must be attending school)
Once the VicScouts online form has been received, we allow a three-week ‘try-out’ period, which helps your child to decide whether they want to become a member of the group and for the leader to determine if they are appropriate for the unit. There is no obligation at this time payment, invoicing and registration will not occur until after the three trial nights or if you choose to become a member of the scout association.
Fees
The fees cover your membership and insurance costs for the year (1st April to 30th March). There is also a once off Joining Fee of $50 to cover the initial costs of joining the group (scarf, badges, program record book etc). In the first year, fees are pro-rata for the remaining period. The breakdown of fees for the 2025/2026 year is:
Registration of a new member will only proceed once the appropriate Fees have been paid in full
Medical conditions or behavioural issues
Parents must keep leaders up to date with any medical or behavioural issues that their child has. We have a strict no bullying policy. Also, we do not tolerate inappropriate language. If you have any concerns, please speak to a leader.
Parent/Carer Involvement
Our group is run entirely by volunteers. Most leaders are, or have been, parents of children in Scouting. We rely heavily on parents to become leaders and to involve themselves in the behind-the-scenes support structures such as the Group Committee. If interested, please contact Peter Baranow on 0418378871.
All Leaders and regular helpers have passed the relevant Police & Working with Children checks. Most of our leaders are also qualified first aiders who update their training annually.
Scouting is a family activity - all parents are required to become involved by helping out in some part of the group, such as a Leader, Adult Helper, Contributor or Committee member or help in areas such as maintenance of equipment (stores), fundraising, buildings maintenance, activities, publicity and promotions. Further details on some of these roles is included below.
Parents need to get a Working With Children check (WWC) as you will be expected at times to assist with transport of children other than yours to activities such as camps. Information on how to get a WWC is at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/.
PLEASE NOTE: All parents are required to assist with our Christmas tree sales fundraiser.
Your occupation and hobby may well be relevant to the running of our Scout group. We often have parents involved to share their knowledge with the kids. If so, please let a leader know.
Award scheme
Scouting involves an award scheme (badges) at all levels. Our program is designed by our leaders to enable all children to achieve the highest level in each section. In the older sections, personal commitment is also needed to achieve this. Scouting also involves camping at all levels which is required to achieve the highest level awards.
Uniform
All members are expected to wear their Scout uniform to weekly meetings and some events and camps. You can purchase the shirt for your child online at www.thescoutshop.com.au. You will see that the Joey, Cub, Scout and Venturer and Rover shirts are different.
When your child is invested they will receive all the relevant badges they need and a scarf.
Footwear
All Scouting activities require enclosed footwear unless otherwise expressly advised. Enclosed footwear would not normally be required for an activity at a pool for instance.
Our Scout Hall
Our hall is at 8A Wallace Street, Ivanhoe. This has recently been renovated.
Activities Program
The activities program for each section is developed and published at the beginning of each term.
Personal Information Record: Once the trial is over, we will require you to complete a Personal Information Record, that will provides emergency contact information and relevant medical conditions to ensure safety at scouting activities. During the trial, please keep us aware of any issues that we may need to take account of in running the scouting program.
WHATS APP – For rapid communication and information about what you childs unit is doing please subscribe to the relevant WHATS APP chat ( search for 10th IVANHOE)
If you have further questions, please speak to any leader. The Scouts Australia website at www.scouts.com.au and the Scouts Victoria website at www.www.vicscouts.asn.auscoutsvictoria.com.au may also be helpful.
